Intricate Octopus

Our long-time partner "SAES Getters Design House" asked us to pick three animals with extraordinary capabilities that could relate to their product. Below you can see the campaigns we have created with Octopus, Tree Frog and Penguin.

for the amazing leg suckers that use a vacuum to grab things. This model was built procedurally so we could control each part of the model.

Making of

The tentacle model was made procedurally with few parameters the sucker shape and main tentacle length could be easily adjusted as needed. We decided that an octopus should be showcased in a designy way, so the model had a bunch of procedural masks and uv channels in order to achieve the desired look. The animation was made with the procedural rig, animation, and simulation passes. the suction action was with dynamic constraints using vex code. In short: if the target (the lid) is nearby and directly in front of the sucker - try to attach, but if less than 50 percent of quicker surface is covered - release immediately (leaky vacuum), if the suction is strong, hold for few seconds and release in order to get a "walking" action. It was not an easy task visually and technically but we think it came out great. Production time was around 2 weeks.
